Yamato Winery in Katsunuma, Japan has been going since 1913 and they've won many international awards, Monde Selection, Champagne Wine Seleciton, etc.

This one in particular won a Monde Selection in Brussels.

This merlot/cab sauvignon blend has a pleasant fruity, spicy nose and is a deep purple colour.

More spicy and earthy than fruity on the palate though.

Slightly acidic and quite smooth in the mouth with no tannins or dryness.

The bottle says it's full bodied but like most Japanese wines I've tried it's a lot lighter than equivalent Old World or New World wines. I would say this is light-medium.

One of the better Japanese reds I've had and also has one of the better labels, not as cheap looking as a lot of Japanese wine labels seem to be. (Although I seem to have misplaced the photo of it, hopefully it will turn up somewhere and I can upload it - hmm found one but it's a bit fuzzy, oh well).
