The Hakushu Distillery in Yamanashi prefecture at the foot of the Southern Japan Alps was founded by Suntory in 1981 (although they have an older distillery dating from 1973 too).

Their whisky range includes 10, 12 and 18 Year Old Single Malts, and this is the 10 Yr old.

It's golden straw coloured in the glass and on the nose there's some alcohol, but it's not too overpowering. There are also notes of wood and peat.

I added a drop of water and on the palate I got some woody, smokey notes with some peat, but mainly warm alcohol.

This is a good single malt whisky, but not too complex in it's flavours. Mainly smoke and peat, which don't linger too long on the palate.

This is my first Hakushu whisky, so I'm going to look for the 18 and 12 Yr olds next, to compare.

My local supermarket recently started up a monthly whisky club, where you get a different whisky each month. The first months whisky was the Hakushu 10 Yr Single Malt, so I had another chance to review it.

It has a sweet floral nose with a hint of petrol and alcohol. Smooth on the palate with a little sharpness around the edge of the tongue. Smooth down the throat, and warming.
Tastewise, some subtle smokiness and some woody characteristics. There was a hint of floral, perfume on the finish.

Really nice. I scored it a bit higher this time. I guess it's growing on me!
