Cragganmore 20 Year Old 1991 Single Cask

I received this dram as a free sample from Master of Malt (but as always I'm reviewing it as if I'd bought it - well actually seeing as I didn't fork out my own cash on it, I don't have to convince myself I like it, so maybe I might review it a little harsher...however this is a great single malt whisky so no worries there).

In the glass it's a nice pale yellow colour, like a strong chardonnay or a weak apple juice.

Taking my first sniff I got hit with a powerful blast of warm alcohol (this is a 54.2% abv whisky, so no surprises there).

Initially I tasted it without water and got a blast of alcoholic heat on the palate too. Tingly and zingy on the gums and cheeks. This has a real kick to it.

Tastewise, after the alcohol had cleared, there's a creamy finish with hints of vanilla and some wood.

I added a few drops of water and the alcohol dropped off slightly and the creamy vanilla became more pronounced.

This whisky really grew on me.
It has a really nice finish to it. Creamy, warm and soft with a pleasant alcoholic zing.

This is an excellent whisky, but has quite a big alcoholic hit to it, so may not appeal to everyone.
