This sake is from Iga in Mie Prefecture which apparently is a famous Ninja town! I'm not sure if there are any still there (you probably wouldn't see them even if they were), but back in the day there were lots of ninjas skulking around apparently.

It was another sake from the monthly sake club I've joined and, like all the others, was entered into the Slow Food Japan 2009 contest.

The sake itself is made from Ukonnishi rice from Iga so it's very much a local brew. The rice is polished down to 60%.

Hanzo sake has a nihonshudo of +5 so should be pretty dry.

On the nose there's a light, sweet fragrance, and the sake has a slight yellow hint to it in the glass.

I had this chilled, and it had a syrupy feel in the mouth. A full bodied, thick feel to it.
The sake is smooth and a little dry (not as dry as I thought it would be).

On the palate I got an odd hint or a feeling of nuts, very subtle though, but it was there.

It doesn't taste like a standard sake.
This is a very interesting and very, very drinkable. I loved it and highly recommend it!

I just had this again as a cup sake, part of my 47 Sake selection (one from each prefecture in Japan), and I have to say it's just as good if not better.

It has that unusual non-sake taste, very smooth and very, very drinkable.

Gonna give it an extra point this time.
