New Years is a big holiday in Japan, much more so than Christmas (which they kinda celebrate, mainly by eating cake, but there's no day off work). For about a week over New Years business stop working, shops close and people relax at home and drink sake and eat special food.

It's traditional to drink sake on New Years day at lunchtime with a special selection of food called Osechi. Usually this sake is a special kind of sake that often has flakes of gold in it.

This is one of Gekkeikan Brewery's New Years special sake (and it has the gold flakes).

It's a light, fresh, crisp sake, perfect for lunchtime drinking (on New Years day!).

Admittedly I'm not a big fan of osechi (mashed sweet potato with chestnuts, black soybeans, simmered burdock root, etc), so I had it cold with salami, parma ham, cheese and olives. They went together pretty well.

Gekkeikan also have a very good English website that covers their products aswell as a lot of information about making sake, types of sake and more. It can be found here.
