Awamori is an alcoholic drink from Okinawa and like sake it's made from rice, but unlike sake (which is brewed) this is distilled (so more like shochu) and is generally a lot stronger than sake (sometimes up to 30~40%!).

I had it on a trip to Okinawa a few years ago and found it similar to drinking neat vodka (same as shochu in many ways), and I wasn't a big fan.

This Awamori Kura is from Helios Brewery in Okinawa (who also make the excellent, if unusual Goya Dry Beer - a beer made from the juice of the Goya plant), and came as part of my 47 Sake set (one from each prefecture in Japan).

Although I thought that set was just sake (nihonshu) they were obviously using the proper Japanese, with "sake" meaning alcohol as opposed to what we in the West call "Sake" (Nihonshu).

The Kura has a sweet alcoholic nose, like a light, fruity vodka.

On the palate it tastes a lot like vodka. Not too sharp or tart, with an alcoholic finish.

Actually to be honest, all I got from this was alcohol and a light vodka taste.

Not too impressed.

I definitely think Awamori is an acquired taste, or maybe I'm just drinking it wrong. The proper way of drinking Awamori is diluted with ice and water, which admittedly I didn't do, I just had it straight (which is another way of drinking it, but perhaps - at least for me - not the best way).
