Shochu is a fairly strong (20-30% alcohol) alcoholic drink very popular in Japan recently, overtaking sake in fact.
To be honest I don't know why, and I don't see the appeal, as I find sake much more pleasant to drink, but I think there are a couple of reasons
a) sake is seen as old fashioned and uncool by many younger people,
b) shochu has less calories.
Sake is made from rice, shochu can be made from rice, wheat, potatoes and other ingredients.
This particular shochu was made from rice (Kome in the name is Japanese for rice).
I had it on the rocks, and to me it tasted just like alcohol, like neat vodka.
I didn't, but it is usual to mix it with water (to make it more drinkable I guess).
It's just not my taste, I'll stick with sake for now.
