Beaujolais Nouveau 2011

It’s coming up to that Beaujolais Nouveau time of the year again, and due to time differences Japan always gets it first, and is probably the only country that still gets excited about it.

The convenience stores have pre-order flyers so you can make sure you get yours as soon as possible.

My boss always gets everyone 2 bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau each year, and hopefully this year won’t be any different.

Mind you, I wasn’t very impressed with last years wine, so fingers crossed it’s better in 2011.

Another Fish Shaped Wine Bottle

It’s been a while but I finally found another fish shaped wine bottle!
I just happened to be doing my usual weekly shop in the local supermarket when there it was, sitting on the shelf…

Pescevino Rosso

Pescevino Rosso from Pescevino Winery in Osimo Italy.
A very dry, fruity wine that was surprisingly drinkable (a bit unfair perhaps but I wasn’t expecting much, seeing as it’s an Italian table wine in a fish shaped wine bottle).

The other fish-shaped bottled wine I’ve tried was the Boscato Rosso from Villa Dante which unfortunately was shockingly bad.

I’d previously spotted (but not tasted) another Pescevino Rosso bottle on a trip to Katsunuma, but that was a blue bottle, so a different blend perhaps?

Anyway, it’s good to know that these gimmicky wine bottles are still out there! And while they’re out there, I’ll keep buying them! (Well, maybe just the once, depending on what’s inside them of course).

Japanese Wine Chocolate

I was in my local “Conbini” (Convenience Store) the other day when I spotted these
Wine Chocolates by the till.
Well obviously I had to give them a try (and they were only ¥32 each),
and have A Luxurious Aftertaste.

They weren’t bad actually, with a soft jelly like centre, and according to the ingredients list, actually contained wine.

I wonder if they have sake or beer flavours?

Now That IS an Expensive Wine

Last week a world record for a single bottle of wine at auction was set when a bottle of Cheval Blanc 1947 went under the hammer for a crazy $304,375!
The bottle was an Imperial-size which is the equivalent of eight standard bottles.

And there’s me debating whether to splash out and get a $30 bottle instead of a $25!

The Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique: Cire Perdue

In other auction news (as they say on the telly), a 64 year old The Macallan Single Malt whiskey in a Lalique decanter sold for a record price of $460,000.

The proceeds are going to the charity:water which provides clean and safe drinking water to developing nations. More information about their work can be found here.
