Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival 2011

At the end of September the Kobe Regatta and Athletic Club (KR&C) held their first annual Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival in the garden of their main building.

Over 12 Japanese craft beers were on offer throughout the day and in the short time I was there I tried about 6 of them.

There were several live bands, a kids play area, food and a charity raffle for the Red Cross Japan and the International Disaster Relief Organization Japan.

I won a t-shirt! – Unfortunately it was too small, so I passed it on to a charity flea market at our local supermarket.

Unlike some beer festivals this was free entry and you just bought tickets for the number of beers you wanted to try. This was a result, as my wife doesn’t drink beer so (rightly) refuses to go to festivals and pay ¥3000 to watch other people get drunk!

New Japanese Beers for the Summer

This Summer saw the release of three new Japanese beers from the main Japanese breweries, Kirin, Asahi and Sapporo. Although only Kirin released a real beer.
The other two opted for the cheaper option of beer-like drinks (daisan).

Asahi Blue Label

First came the Asahi Blue Label which, inevitably, being a fake beer from Asahi, was pretty disappointing.

It was however drinkable, and on the plus side, it’s only 27kCal/100ml and has 0 sugar.

Kirin To Reopen in Sendai

Some more good news from disaster hit Sendai, after the news back in May that Asahi restarting beer shipments from it’s brewery in Fukushima, and Miyagikyo Distillery reopening it’s tours, it seems that Kirin Brewery Co. will be resuming work at it’s Sendai plant in September and will start shipping beer from there in November.

Operations will remain at 60% of it’s capacity, the Yomiuri Shimbun reports, for the time being at least.

Kirin are also planning on using hops from Tono, in Iwate prefecture to make the beer in order to help with the recovery of the Tohoku region.

Kirin To Release a Beer on the Rocks

Kirin Ice + Beer

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, at the end of July, Japanese Brewery Kirin will release a beer designed specifically to be drunk over ice. They’re calling it, rather originally, “Ice + Beer“.

It seems they were “inspired” by the recent trend of drinking wine or sake with ice.

This is a recent trend?

I’ve been drinking sake on the rocks for ages now. Guess that makes me a trend setter!
Or I’ve just been doing it wrong up till now.

This new kind of beer will be unique as the taste and aroma won’t weaken in the ice.
So they say.

They’re using sweeter-smelling hops and a special yeast aswell as more malt to give it a deeper colour (so the dilution in the ice water won’t be so noticeable?).

Beer on the Rocks isn’t a new thing as I tried one from another Japanese brewery,
Toast Tazawako Kohan no Mori Beer, called, aptly enough Beer on the Rocks, which was pretty good.

Tasted that one last December so would like to give it another go now Japan’s summer’s here and the temperatures in the mid 30s!

Update (11/08/11): The beer was released recently and I reviewed it here. Pretty nice it is too.

Asahi To Restart Beer Shipments from Fukushima

Looks like disaster struck Fukushima is slowly getting back on it’s feet with recent news that the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai reopened it’s distillery tours, which were suspended after the quake, and newspapers yesterday reporting that Asahi Breweries will be resuming it’s shipments of beer from it’s brewery in Motomiya, Fukushima Prefecture by the end of June.

Brewing starts this month with canning, etc. from next.

The brewery is 57km from the Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant and radiation detectors will be used at the brewery for product safety.

Good news all round, and hopefully smaller businesses will also be able to get back to normal soon too.
