/> There were several live bands, a kids play area, food and a charity raffle for the <a
href="http://www.jrc.or.jp/english/relief/l4/Vcms4_00002070.html" target="_blank">Red Cross Japan</a> and the <strong>International Disaster Relief Organization Japan.</strong></p><p><strong></strong>I won a t-shirt! &#8211; Unfortunately it was too small, so I passed it on to a charity flea market at our local supermarket.</p><div
style="clear:both"></div><p>Unlike some beer festivals this was free entry and you just bought tickets for the number of beers you wanted to try. This was a result, as my wife doesn&#8217;t drink beer so (rightly) refuses to go to festivals and pay ¥3000 to watch other people get drunk!<br

href="http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/newsroom/japan-earthquake-tsunami-help-20110311-084815-717.html">disaster hit Sendai</a>, after the <a
href="http://www.moippai.com/blog/2011/05/asahi-to-restart-beer-shipments-from-fukushima/">news back in May</a> that <strong>Asahi</strong> restarting beer shipments from it&#8217;s brewery in <strong>Fukushima</strong>, and <strong>Miyagikyo Distillery</strong> reopening it&#8217;s tours, it seems that <strong>Kirin Brewery Co.</strong> will be resuming work at it&#8217;s Sendai plant in September and will start shipping beer from there in November.</p><p>Operations will remain at 60% of it&#8217;s capacity, the <strong>Yomiuri Shimbun</strong> reports, for the time being at least.</p><p>Kirin are also planning on using hops from <strong>Tono</strong>, in <strong>Iwate prefecture</strong> to make the beer in order to help with the recovery of the Tohoku region.</p><div

They&#8217;re calling it, rather originally, &#8220;<strong>Ice + Beer</strong>&#8220;.</p><p>It seems they were &#8220;inspired&#8221; by the recent trend of drinking wine or sake with ice.<br/><br/><em>This is a recent trend?</em><br/><br/>I&#8217;ve been drinking sake on the rocks for ages now. Guess that makes me a trend setter! <img
src='http://www.moippai.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> <br/>Or I&#8217;ve just been doing it wrong up till now.</p><p>This new kind of beer will be unique as the <strong>taste</strong> and <strong>aroma</strong> won&#8217;t weaken in the ice.<br/>So they say.<br/><br
/> They&#8217;re using <strong>sweeter-smelling hops</strong> and a <strong>special yeast</strong> aswell as <strong>more malt</strong> to give it a deeper colour (so the dilution in the ice water won&#8217;t be so noticeable?).</p><p><strong>Beer on the Rocks</strong> isn&#8217;t a new thing as I tried one from another <strong>Japanese brewery</strong>, <br/><a
href="http://www.orae.net/beer.html">Toast Tazawako Kohan no Mori Beer</a>, called, aptly enough <a
href="http://www.moippai.com/beer-reviews/Beer-on-the-Rocks-190.html">Beer on the Rocks</a>, which was pretty good.<br/><br
/> Tasted that one last December so would like to give it another go now Japan&#8217;s summer&#8217;s here and the temperatures in the mid 30s!</p><p><i>Update (11/08/11)</i>: The beer was released recently and I reviewed it <a

href="http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/newsroom/japan-earthquake-tsunami-help-20110311-084815-717.html">disaster struck Fukushima</a> is slowly getting back on it&#8217;s feet with recent news that the <a
href="http://nonjatta.blogspot.com/2011/04/distilleries-reopen-for-visitors.html">Miyagikyo Distillery</a> in Sendai reopened it&#8217;s distillery tours, which were suspended after the quake, and <a
href="http://mdn.mainichi.jp/">newspapers</a> yesterday reporting that <strong>Asahi Breweries</strong> will be resuming it&#8217;s shipments of beer from it&#8217;s brewery in Motomiya, Fukushima Prefecture by the end of June.</p><p>Brewing starts this month with canning, etc. from next.</p><p>The brewery is 57km from the Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant and radiation detectors will be used at the brewery for product safety.</p><p>Good news all round, and hopefully smaller businesses will also be able to get back to normal soon too.</p><div
