Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival 2011

At the end of September the Kobe Regatta and Athletic Club (KR&C) held their first annual Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival in the garden of their main building.

Over 12 Japanese craft beers were on offer throughout the day and in the short time I was there I tried about 6 of them.

There were several live bands, a kids play area, food and a charity raffle for the Red Cross Japan and the International Disaster Relief Organization Japan.

I won a t-shirt! – Unfortunately it was too small, so I passed it on to a charity flea market at our local supermarket.

Unlike some beer festivals this was free entry and you just bought tickets for the number of beers you wanted to try. This was a result, as my wife doesn’t drink beer so (rightly) refuses to go to festivals and pay ¥3000 to watch other people get drunk!

Beer Pretz

Found these the other day in my local convenience store. Beer Pretz.

Beer Pretz

They have two flavours edamame and sweetcorn. An ideal accompaniment for beer, so I thought I’d give them a go.

The sweetcorn flavour actually tasted of sweetcorn which I was pretty surprised about and were pretty moreish.

The edamame on the othe hand were pretty disappointing. I’m a big fan of edamame with my beer or sake, but I just couldn’t get the edamame flavour here.

Still, the sweetcorn version made a good impression so might pick up another pack for our next picnic.

Suntory Aki Raku

Japan is a country with four very distinct seasons and these are usually marked by the release of seasonal beers (or more often than not these days, daisan or low malt fake beers) from the main brewers here.

Last year I reviewed the Aki Aji 秋味 (Taste of Autumn) from Kirin which got a 2011 release also, but Suntory also released the Aki Raku 秋楽 (Translation: Autumn Comfort/Fun) this year.

(Update: It seems this was released last year too, but I guess I missed it. I found a review of it on Beers of Japan from 2010).

Reviewing it myself the other day, I found it to be an okay daisan, a bit flabby and flat, with not much flavourwise, except a slight taste of malt and a very subtle hint of dark chocolate.

However, having said that, for a daisan it’s not actually that bad!

New Japanese Beers for the Summer

This Summer saw the release of three new Japanese beers from the main Japanese breweries, Kirin, Asahi and Sapporo. Although only Kirin released a real beer.
The other two opted for the cheaper option of beer-like drinks (daisan).

Asahi Blue Label

First came the Asahi Blue Label which, inevitably, being a fake beer from Asahi, was pretty disappointing.

It was however drinkable, and on the plus side, it’s only 27kCal/100ml and has 0 sugar.

Belgian Beer Weekend, Osaka

Back in June of this year a Belgian Beer Festival was held in Osaka, Japan organised by Belgian beer importers and bars under the title of Belgian Beer Weekend (or Belgium for Japan). Part of the proceeds went to help rebuild areas of Japan devastated in the earthquake and tsunami in March.

All the major Belgian beers were represented from Stella, Hoegaarden and Duvel through to the lesser well known (at least in Japan), like Rochefort, Orval and Saison Regal.
In total there were 48 different Belgian beers on offer.

You paid your ¥3100 and for this you got a special commemorative glass (part of the profits from which went to the charities), and 10 tokens to start you off on your beer tour of Belgium.
