Japanese Wine Chocolate

I was in my local “Conbini” (Convenience Store) the other day when I spotted these
Wine Chocolates by the till.
Well obviously I had to give them a try (and they were only ¥32 each),
and have A Luxurious Aftertaste.

They weren’t bad actually, with a soft jelly like centre, and according to the ingredients list, actually contained wine.

I wonder if they have sake or beer flavours?

Red Wine and Sake Help Create Superconductor

Bit of a techie post today. In today’s newspaper there was an article about how a group of Japanese scientists have discovered that soaking a special type of iron in red wine, sake or beer makes it a superconductor (a superconductor conducts electricity without resistance, i.e very fast).

The cool sounding Nano Frontier Materials Group at the National Institute for Materials Science in Ibaraki, Japan created an “iron telluride compound”, whatever that is, which was similar to a superconductor on a molecular level but didn’t show any of the special properties.

Leaving it on a desk for a week they came back to find it started showing superconductive properties. Probably due to moisture in the air they thought. So they experimented with water, ethanol and other stuff but got nowhere.

Top 5 Japanese Father’s Day Presents

It’s Father’s Day in many western countries today, as it is in Japan and recently the Asahi Shinbun published a Father’s Day Special article where they asked 3277 dads (don’t know why it was that random number!) what was the best Father’s Day present…

Number one was : Appreciation From Their Kids

Which is nice.

Number 2 was a little bit more relevant to this blog, as it was Sake (alcohol).

So they then asked 488 dads what their Top 5 Sake presents would be….and the results in reverse order are…

Dokodemo Wine – Anywhere Wine

Stamp Of Australia Wine

I found this little gem in the local supermarket the other day, and it’s an Australian wine so I’m sure this bottle is not exclusive to Japan, but it did have a certain Japanese feel to it in it’s clever design.

It’s called “Dokodemo Wine” (どこでもワイン) in Japanese which translates as “Anywhere Wine” , because you can take it and drink it anywhere as you can see from the picture, the bottles “closure” is actually a plastic bottle which you unscrew and fill with the wine.

Ingenious.

The wine itself is called Stamp of Australia and is produced by Hardys Winery in Australia and it’s not bad (bearing in mind it comes in a plastic bottle so you can’t expect Mouton Rothschild), it’s very drinkable and I’ll definitely be buying some for my next bbq by the river or picnic – just a shame I didn’t find it earlier for this years “Cherry Blossom Viewing”.

It’s a hell of a lot better than the other take-out wine, the canned wine from Barokes.

They also make a Chardonnay Semillion version which I’ll buy next time I’m the supermarket.

Kyoto, Sake and The Geisha

Geisha in Kyoto

A trip to Kyoto last year ended up as it usually seems to with a trip to Gion and some Geisha spotting.

We timed it well this time (about 4:30pm for anyone planning a visit) as there seemed to be a lot of activity from the Geisha and Maiko (apprentice geisha) travelling from one house or restaurant to another down the beautiful side streets of Gion.

I managed to take this picture as a very pretty Maiko walked passed me down the street.

Just before we went to Gion, I bought an unusual wine/sake from a shop just around the corner that mainly sells little hard sweet in the shape of sushi but also a few bottles of sake and wine.

Petit Moon Sake

It’s called Petit Moon and according to the label is a
“Sake Based Liquor“.

The Japanese name is “Budou No Sake” which means “Grapes’s Sake” (or Sake made of Grapes), so I think it must be a grape wine and a sake rice wine hybrid.

Anyway, it was way too juice-like for me (despite an 8% alcohol level) but my wife loved it.

I also bought some “normal” sake there but haven’t got around to trying that yet, I’ll add it to the sake reviews when I do.
