On a recent trip to Awajishima (Awaji island, a tiny island inbetween Honshu and Shikoku, just off the coast of Kobe), we stopped in at the local sake brewery Sennenichi to pick up a bottle of the local brew to take home.

We were greeted very warmly and were very quickly invited for a mini-tour of the brewery by the extremely friendly owner.

A New Way To Drink Sake

In Japan there are a thousand and one ways to buy and drink sake. From the huge barrels you find outside Shinto shrines and at weddings or company promotional events, to the standard 1.8l or 750ml bottles, to the one-cup glasses or box cartons from vending machines.

Recently in Family Mart convenience stores a new way to drink sake has appeared, or as they say on the side in remarkably good English for a Japanese company

With this product we bring you a new way to enjoy sake.

“This product” is a small, 200ml,screw-cap metallic bottle that you usually find containing coffee.

There are four in this range ranging from your standard sake
(Kire no Aru cho Karaguchi Seishu from Takara Shuzo, the black can) at ￥265 up to the slightly more expensive (Sukkirishita Ajiwa Daiginjo from Nihonsakari, the blue can) at ￥365.

Sake Club for July

Late again with my post about July’s sake club selection – the August delivery arrived yesterday. At least I’d managed to try them all this time. Just this minute posted up the reviews.

Sake Club for July

All three were phenomenal sakes this time, all scoring 90 or more with one reaching 95!

The sake’s were from three different breweries in 3 different prefectures and all made with different rice varieties. But all were excellent.

Junmaikarakuchi Yauemon (純米辛口弥右衛門) from Yaumeon Brewery in Fukushima Prefecture : 94 points.
Tenryou Tokubetsu Junmai Tobikiri (天領　特別純米　飛切り) from Tenryou Brewery in Gifu Prefecture : 90 points. They have an English website worth checking out…here.
And finally, my favourite:
Yoimai Ayakiku (よいまい綾菊) from Ayakiku Brewery in Kagawa Prefecture : 95 points.

An excellent selection from July, let’s hope the August batch are just as good.

Sake Club June

Very late with this post, as the July’s batch of sake’s arrived last week and I am only just getting round to reviewing the June’s selection.

Well, the June’s batch were excellent with two of them scoring in the 90s (and the other one fairly close).

As always these are from the 2009 Slow Food Nippon contest at which 131 breweries throughout Japan entered their sakes.

I get sent 3 a month for 6 months, so hopefully I will have tried the best 18 sakes from those 131 breweries.

Sake Club for May

Bit late posting this as the June delivery is due tomorrow, but these are the 3 sake bottles that were delivered in May from my Sake Club here in Japan.

Again, they are all from the Slow Food Nippon 2009 contest, and they are (from left to right) :

Umenishiki Junmaigenshu from Umenishiki Brewery in Ehime Prefecture
Houyou Junmaishu from Uchigasaki Brewery in Migaki prefecture
Hanzo Tokubetsu Junmaishu from Ota Sake Brewery in Mie Prefecture

So far I’ve only tried the Umenishiki (which was a little disappointing) and the Houyou (which was fantastic and is highly recommended!). Clean, fresh and very drinkable.

The Uchigasaki website (here) is only in Japanese but worth checking out for some cool Japanese images and designs as well as this page if you’re into anime, and the Sengoku Basara (戦国Basara) TV series (which I have only just heard of but like the bottle labels so will be looking out for that sake).

The Umenishiki Brewery home page is also only in Japanese but the Ota Sake Brewery site does have English with lots of good information about their sakes including whether it’s best to drink them chilled, room temperature or warm. Which is very useful to know.
