Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival 2011

At the end of September the Kobe Regatta and Athletic Club (KR&C) held their first annual Sannomiya Craft Beer Tasting Festival in the garden of their main building.

Over 12 Japanese craft beers were on offer throughout the day and in the short time I was there I tried about 6 of them.

There were several live bands, a kids play area, food and a charity raffle for the Red Cross Japan and the International Disaster Relief Organization Japan.

I won a t-shirt! – Unfortunately it was too small, so I passed it on to a charity flea market at our local supermarket.

Unlike some beer festivals this was free entry and you just bought tickets for the number of beers you wanted to try. This was a result, as my wife doesn’t drink beer so (rightly) refuses to go to festivals and pay ¥3000 to watch other people get drunk!

New Japanese Beers for the Summer

This Summer saw the release of three new Japanese beers from the main Japanese breweries, Kirin, Asahi and Sapporo. Although only Kirin released a real beer.
The other two opted for the cheaper option of beer-like drinks (daisan).

Asahi Blue Label

First came the Asahi Blue Label which, inevitably, being a fake beer from Asahi, was pretty disappointing.

It was however drinkable, and on the plus side, it’s only 27kCal/100ml and has 0 sugar.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Beer Cans

With Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) just around the corner here in Japan, the major breweries
have started to release Sakura (cherry blossom) versions of their cans, or in some cases, like the Orion Ichiban Sakura, new seasonal beers.

For those that don’t know, Hanami is a time for families, friends and work colleagues to take a break and sit around on blue tarpaulin under cherry blossom trees and Eat, Drink and be Merry.

Here are some of the – very pretty – cans I’ve picked up recently.

Suntory Kinmugi

Orion Ichiban Sakura

The Kirin and Suntory Kinmugi are the same as in their usual cans, but the Orion Ichiban Sakura (Number One Cherry Blossom) is a new beer.

McDonalds and Asahi Join Forces in Asahi Clear Campaign

McDonalds in Japan and Asahi Breweries Ltd have joined forces in a what some might consider a dream promotional campaign.
Although those that have tried the Asahi Clear daisan (beer-like drink) from Asahi might have a different opinion.

Asahi Clear, a Lady and a Big Mac

6-packs and crates of 24 Clear Asahi come with a scratch card (or a Pick-Up Card as they’re calling it. Pick-Up means To Choose in Japanese English), which if you win you can claim
One Free Big Mac!

I’m not sure if that’s enough of an incentive for me to switch to Asahi Clear (I only scored it
78 in my review), much as I do like a Big Mac every now and then.

You can’t actually buy beer in McDonalds in Japan, but Kentucky Fried Chicken do sell
Kirin Free the non-alcohol lager from Kirin but to be honest that’s worse than the Asahi Clear.

The Japan Beer Times

There aren’t many magazines in English printed in Japan and only a couple of bi-lingual ones so I was very surprised and pleased to discover
The Japan Beer Times, “The Craft Beer Magazine of Japan”,
a free(!) bi-lingual magazine.

It’s been going since the beginning of 2010 and is published quarterly it seems with articles on beer, breweries, home-brew recipes and even some haiku, along with lists of contact information for Japanese breweries.

It’s free from craft breweries, bars and tourist shops apparently buy unfortunately there are none near me (although there are lots of sake breweries…if only there was a bi-lingual magazine for sake!), however it’s available to buy from their website at a token price of ￥50 plus postage.
