Related posts on MoIppai]]> Unsurprisingly really with the current ongoing global economic crisis, French wine exports have fallen 25% in the first six months of 2009.

Everybody’s cutting back it seems and luxuries like expensive wine, champagne (down 45%!) and cognac (down 27%) are one of the first to go.

Ironically really seeing as this year I’ve been experimenting with more expensive wine (although admittdly that just means a jump from $10 to $20-30 but still, it’s a step up).

Less expensive table wines fell only 1% apparently (which is probably the range where my ‘more expensive wine’ really sits…lol )

New Champagne Closure

I found an interesting article in The Times the other day about a new Champagne bottle closure.

Apparently the company that pioneered the screwcap for wine, Alcan Packaging, has had a go at re-inventing the closure for champagne bottles. People are frightened of the possible damage caused by
an exploding cork – isn’t that half the suspense and fun??

Obviously everyone wanted to keep the wondrous popping noise that is necessary for the ritual of opening champagne so a screwcap was no good.

After 3 years(!!!) they came up with an aluminium closure, covered with plastic. Attached to this is a lever which is easily lifted to break the seal.

Currently Champagne winery Duval Leroy is testing the market with this new closure.

I’d be interested to see this in action but seeing as I drink champagne maybe once or twice a year, it’s fairly unlikely :(
