Belgian Beer Weekend, Osaka

Back in June of this year a Belgian Beer Festival was held in Osaka, Japan organised by Belgian beer importers and bars under the title of Belgian Beer Weekend (or Belgium for Japan). Part of the proceeds went to help rebuild areas of Japan devastated in the earthquake and tsunami in March.

All the major Belgian beers were represented from Stella, Hoegaarden and Duvel through to the lesser well known (at least in Japan), like Rochefort, Orval and Saison Regal.
In total there were 48 different Belgian beers on offer.

You paid your ¥3100 and for this you got a special commemorative glass (part of the profits from which went to the charities), and 10 tokens to start you off on your beer tour of Belgium.

Beer Festivals 2010

Like many beer drinkers I like a good beer festival or two, for example the dramatically titled Great Japan Beer Festival which is held in Yokohama, Osaka and Tokyo every year, so when HolidayCheck (www.holidaycheck.co.uk) recently sent me a press release about their favourite beer festivals of 2010, I thought I might aswell share it here.

I actually discovered that Durham (in the UK), where half my family are from, actually has a beer festival I knew nothing about! (I’d also recommend a visit to Durham as it’s a beautiful city with a very impressive Cathedral and University, and very friendly people).

Some of them, like the Durham festival have already been and gone, but there are still a few left in September and October, or you could always plan ahead for next year.

Great Japan Beer Festival 2010

After thoroughly enjoying last years Great Japan Beer Festival at the Kyosera Dome Sky Hall in Osaka, I can’t wait to go to this years Festival in less than three weeks time.

It’s being held at the Kyosera Hall again on this month’s long Bank Holiday Weekend, from 17th-19th July.

Tickets cost ￥4100 in advance or ￥4500 on the door, which I think is an increase on last year, but can’t complain as you get to try over 120 micro-brewed beers from throughout the world.

Which due to the large numbers of gaijin (foreigners) who go, is in English aswell as Japanese!

~~Will post a report after the event…~~ – Unfortunately I couldn’t make it in the end, I did hear they had over 2500 people on the first day so sounds like it was bigger than last years.

Osaka Beer Festival 2009

Finally getting round to writing about the Great Japan Beer Festival 2009 at Osaka Kyocera Dome (usually home to the Orix Buffaloes baseball team, but that day was home to a lot of drunken Japanese and a surprising percentage of gaijin – nothing brings gaijin out the wood-work than “all you can drink beer”!).

I hadn’t been to a Japanese beer festival before so wasn’t really sure what to expect. I went to one back in London a few years back and it was a massive affair, taking up the whole of Olympia or somewhere with hundreds of beers from all over Britain and the world.

This festival was boasting some 120 types of beer so was obviously going to be a smaller affair. Having said that I was a bit surprised when as opposed to being in one of the big halls at the Osaka Dome it was actually held around the edge of the building where the toilets and food stands usually are at these kinds of places.

Great Japan Beer Festival 2009

Last weekend in Tokyo was one of the Great Japan Beer Festival where you can sample more than 120 micro brewed beers. Unfortunately Tokyo is a bit of a trek from Kansai where I live, but fortunately, the Festival is also coming to Osaka next month (18th-20th July)!

They have a great system in restaurants and some bars in Japan called “nomihodai” which basically means “All you can drink” (there’s also “tabehodai” which is “All you can eat” – if you can get these 2 together it’s a marvellous night out )

Usually there’s a time limit of 90minutes or 2 hours. (No one would make money otherwise!). The “All you can Drink” kind of works in Japan as they’re not a nation of drinkers, unlike say, the English. Or rather, I should say, they do like a a drink, but usually get drunk after 3 as opposed to 6 or 9 like the English generally do.

So, for ￥4000 ($40) you can drink all the beer you want at the Festival. Nice. Not sure if I’ll be able to work through the 120 beers though, even if you do only get a 50ml glass.

While I was investigating this festival and the Japan Craft Beer Association who organize it I was surprised to see their headquarters are located in my city! And a couple of days later I happened to walk past their office. It was closed at the time (think they were in Tokyo getting drunk…), but am very tempted to contact them, if only my Japanese will hold up. Although it does tend to improve with alcohol consumption…
