Chanmoris Winery, Katsunuma Japan

The next winery on our tour of Katsunuma wineries in Japan was directly across the road from Domaine Chateraise, the Chanmoris Winery owned by the rather long named company Koshu Budou ShuHonPo.
Not sure what that translates as but Koshu Budou = Koshu Grapes, which are the only native grapes to Japan, and make up a lot of Japanese wines.

It was out of season to visit wineries (mid August), at least so it seemed as the place was deserted and we were the only visitors (there was a couple of other people in the tasting room but they were just leaving as we arrived).

First we had a wander around the short tour of the winery buildings, which meant you basically walked past some windows into the rooms where the machinery was all laying unused.

I imagine at bottling and pressing time it’s a lot more interesting, but unfortunately not this time.
One minute later we were back in the tasting room ready to try their wares.

There were a couple of very nice ladies who were very happy to pour us small glasses of each of the wine and were also very well informed about the wines too.
The wines were also laid out on the bar and not kept in the fridge which we were to find out later was the norm around here.

Unfortunately I can’t remember a great deal about the specific wines, other than some of the reds were ok, but the sweet whites were very popular with my wife.
I also took a picture of this bottle in particular, which has written on it Nigori Wine which means Cloudy Wine.
As you can see at the bottom of the bottle there’s white sediment.

You often get cloudy sake (unfiltered) so I’m guessing this is a similar process, the white wine isn’t fully filtered so it leaves some (a lot) of sediment behind.

Didn’t buy any of this, so think it was more of a novelty for me as opposed to having a great taste.

They had a large selection of wines on offer as well as gift box sets, snacks and the soon to become obligatory wine soaps and bath salts.

We did intend to come back and buy some of their wine but unfortunately that didn’t happen.
