Big Wine Bottles From Japan

Previous Katsunuma post

On our recent trip to Katsunuma, one of the main wine regions in Japan, I took along my new toy, a video camera and shot some random footage.

This is my first video posting and it’s pretty random but there was a reason for it…

Japanese style BBQ

We’d just finished a huge bbq at the B&B and decided to walk it off by wandering through the town.

We found a nice place where we could try grapes and I noticed they had an off-license attached.

Well, we had to have a look around, and was pleased to discover they served wine by the glass :)
It was only after ordering a couple of glasses I realised my wallet was back in the B&B!

My wife quickly volunteered to go back and left me with this ancient looking (but lovely) Japanese woman at the till.
Our conversation quickly stalled (her English was non-existant and my Japanese wasn’t good enough to fully understand her), so I wandered around a bit with my camera…

It’s not the most exciting video, but it does end on some interesting wine bottles. (and you can get a glimpse of the little old lady about 10 seconds in).

In this area of Katsunuma they sell wine in normal sized bottles, but also huge 1.8litre ones (that are usually used for sake, Japanese rice wine).

The bottles are also not closed with corks, but like the sake, with plastic caps, that you prize off and push back on again to seal.

We later bought one of these large bottles from Asaya winery and the wine was pretty good.
