My New Decanter and the Sake Bottle
I’ve been drinking wine for a few years now, but don’t have a decanter! Instead I’ve been using this great jar I bought a few years ago which is used for keeping sake cold.
As you may know sake can be drunk cold (reishu) or warm (atsukan), so this bottle has a pocket you put ice cubes in and the sake stays cold.
To be honest I don’t think it’s specifically for sake, as obviously you can put any cold drink in there, white wine, lemonade, anything.
Anyway, I’ve been using it as a red wine decanter when not drinking sake. Trouble is, it only holds about 2/3rds of a bottle.
Well, now, I have a decanter! My wife bought me one a few weeks ago as an anniversary present.
Now I can decant and properly let my wines breathe (maybe I should start buying more expensive ones!).
I also found a great article on Decanting Wine History on the Why Wine Blog (which I’ve just noticed has a new entry on How to Decant Wine which is worth a read too).
In case you noticed the Japanese Mook (Magazine/Book – very popular in Japan) in the phtoo above, it’s a beginners guide to wine and has some very interesting ideas on smells for different kinds of wine.
I’ll blog about it another time, but does anyone know which variety of grape smells of beetles and more importantly does anyone know what a beetle smells like??! (Apparently Japanese people do).
