This Abbey Ale from St Bernard is a staggering 10% abv and won a Gold Medal at the 2006 World Beer Championships.

I took the cap off the bottle and the beer kind of exploded out of the bottle in a huge foaming head, all over me and the table. I lost about a third of the beer! (And no, I hadn't been shaking it, in fact it had been sitting still for ages). Not a good start.
It kept foaming out of the top like one of those indoor fireworks tablets that just keep pushing out a black worm looking thing. I never could understand how that classed as a firework when I was a kid.

Anyway, I digress. So the big, foamy head is a yellowy-white colour and the ale is a dirty muddy brown (almost ebony it says on their website).

It has a strong malty smell.

In the mouth it's bitter with a creamy texture and has a dark, roasted malt taste.

The aftertaste has hints of dark chocolatey malts and quite roasted.

It's a very flavourful beer and I quite like it. It's just a shame I lost a lot of it at the beginning.

Be warned though, it is 10% alcohol so not for the faint hearted.
