This is a Trappist Ale from the Orval monastery/brewery near Florenville, in south-east Belgium.

The brewery has only been going since 1931 although the monastery dates from at least the 16th century.

This ale is made with barley malt and is dark straw coloured with a big, off-white frothy head.
It's slightly fizzy and fairly opaque.

Quite a fruity hoppy smell, actually it has almost a medicinal smell to it.

It has a fairly strong hoppy taste. Fuity hoppy with hints of cherries or something. A little sweet too.

Quite soft and full in the mouth, this ale also has a long finish.

An interesting beer with a distinctive slightly unusual taste which was not really to my taste unfortunately.

Thinking about it the aftertaste (and that slightly medicinal smell) reminded me of the soft drink Tizer - what was that supposed to have tasted like?
"We can tell it's Tizer when our eyes are shut!" - indeed.

I had this again the other day, and noticed some tropical fruits (pineapple) on the nose and subtly on the palate this time. It has a clean, soapy(?) nose feel to it, which I guess is the tropical fruits.
Didn't notice the Tizer this time.
