This happoshu (low malt beer in Japan) from Okinawa (the home of Mr Miyagi) is actually made with Goya juice. Goya for those that don't know is a very bitter fruit (sometimes called a "bitter melon" in English) that is one of the main foods in Okinawan cuisine - at least it seemed to be on my brief trip there.

It's mixed in with rice, egg, etc and is incredibly, incredibly bitter. I couldn't eat it to be honest.

I was expected very bad things from this beer because of that, but I was pleasantly surprised!

I didn't find it partcularly bitter at all, although it is quite dry.

Quite a light "lager" in colour and mouth feel.
Actually for a happoshu it's suprisingly drinkable and I would be happy to try this again.

The Helios Brewery in Okinawa has been around since 1996 so are still quite a new brewery. Will look out for more from them as this was very pleasant.
