Gouden Carolus Classic

Gouden Carolus Classic

Brewery : Het Anker
Location : Belgium > Mechelen
Beer Type : Beer
Alcohol : 8.5% Abv
Score: 92 by MoIppai (09/07/2011)

This dark, ruby red beer from the Belgium Brewery Het Anker in Mechelen, which has been brewing beer since 1471(!), is named after Charles Quint's (ruler of the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 and ruler of the Spanish Empire from 1516, no less) golden coins apparently. It was originally called The Emperors Beer but renamed to Gouden Carolus in the 1960s.

As I said, it's dark ruby red on the pour with a big, frothy, soapy looking off-white head.

On the nose it's very hoppy and fruity, with hints of citrus fruits, some oranges, lime, and almost tropical.

It's medium bodied and bitter on the palate. Not as fruity as I was expecting from the nose.

Quite a malty taste, especially on the finish. It reminded me of some of the heavier bitter ales from back in England.

The Gouden Carolus Classic is very drinkable and you wouldn't know it was 8.5% abv. It disappears smoothly and cleanly down the throat.

Quite excellent!

The brewery has a pretty good website where you can find out more about their long history and their other beers in the Gouden Carolus range (they also do Christmas and Easter versions apparently, aswell as a single malt whisky due to be launched in 2013!).
The site is here.
