Doppo Unagi Beer

Brewery : Doppo
Location : Japan > Okayama
Beer Type : Beer
Alcohol : 5% Abv

This Doppo Unagi Beer is subtitled, in Japanese, "Unagi ni au bi-ru" which means "Beer that goes well with Eel".
Unagi (eel) is eaten during the summer in Japan, marinated in a sauce and placed on rice. It tastes great, and is supposed to give you energy in the hot, humid Japanese summers.

The Japanese eat eel on "Ushi no hi", which is "Day of the Cow", and it's believed that from the "direction of the cow" (different animals come from different directions, like points on a compass, apparently), comes a god. This god is a black god, and therefore this is a black beer.

This black beer is from Doppo Brewery, who, according to their label are "The Pioneer of Japanese Micro Brewery" since 1995.

The beer itself is black on the pour with a slightly off white, fizzy head.

It's dark and malty like a stout and also strangely rough on teeth like a tannic red wine.

I wasn't too keen on this black beer though it was ok, but a bit too dark and malty for me.

I didn't have it with eel, but maybe if I did I would have enjoyed it more.
