Bakumatsu no Beer (幕末のビール) - Koumin Bakushu

Brewery : Konishi Brewery Company
Location : Japan > Itami
Beer Type : Beer
Alcohol : 4.5% Abv
Score: 90 by MoIppai (29/12/2010)

This beer is "Bakumatsu no Beer" (幕末のビール) which means "End of an Era Beer", and the name of the beer is "Koumin Bakushu" - I don't know what it is with Japanese companies, but their names for beers and sakes can be really confusing.

This brewery is actually mainly a Sake brewery, called Shirayuki - even the names of the breweries are complicated...is it Konishi Brewery or Shirayuki? It's both. (!?!)

Anyway, this is a toffee, caramel coloured beer with a frothy white head.

It has a fresh, clean malty nose with some floral hops.

On the palate it has a creamy texture and a malty taste.

It's quite dry with some bitterness on the aftertaste. It reminds me of a British bitter, like a Tetleys or something.

A pretty good beer but a little expensive for a Japanese beer (bought in Japan) at ¥600 ($6) a bottle. Usually you'd get a Japanese beer, even a craft beer for about ¥400 ($4).
