I'm never sure the correct spelling of Mino (Minoh), in Japanese it's technically Minou (みのう), the "ou" on the end is an extendend "o" sound, and it's written as both in different places.Location : Japan > Minoh

However this bottle has Minoh written so I should use that from now on.
Ok, so the beer...well according to an advert I saw, this won the "Worlds Best Stout" award at the World Beer Awards in the UK, so should be pretty good, and according to the bottle
'It's exceedingly moreish'.
It's not often you see "Moreish" written in Japan, thought that was just a British English phrase.
First off I should say that I don't like stout, not even Guinness, so perhaps not the best idea to review this. However...
It's a midnight black stout with no head and a strong malty smell.
To taste it's quite a light stout I thought with a very dry, bittery, burnt (roasted malt) aftertaste and creamy too.
The roasted malt taste was too strong for me, but as I say, I'm not a stout drinker anyway, and this beer hasn't changed that.
It got the World Best Stout award so people more expert than I rate it highly so I'll just give it a score of 80 and leave it at that.
I wouldn't buy it again, and to be honest it was hard to get to the bottom of the glass for me.

| Well, although I said I wouldn't buy it again, I didn't say my wife wouldn't buy it for me. So I had this again the other day. And a much better experience it was second time around. Perhaps my taste is changing. I got a dark chocolatey aroma this time with hints of coffee. On the palate I got coffee but without the chocolate, and a creamy texture. There was a hint of dark, bitter chocolate on the aftertaste though. I also, strangely, got some popcorn or rice aswell (I read that on the bottle but could taste it aswell, so wasn't cheating!). Overall I would say, this time, it's a very interesting stout with a nice mix of flavours, and the flavours were quite distinguishable too. Unfortunately a bit too dark bitter chocolatey for my taste though (I don't like dark chocolate much either), but I would still score it much higher this time. Perhaps my taste is maturing? :) |
