Sapporo Chocolat Brewery Bitter

Sapporo Chocolat Brewery Bitter

Brewery : Sapporo
Location : Japan > Hokkaido
Beer Type : Happoshu
Alcohol : 5% Abv
Calories : 50KCal/100ml
Score: 82 by MoIppai (20/01/2010)

This is a "mash-up" from Hokkaido based brewery Sapporo and Hokkaido based chocolate company "Royce", and an unusual mix it is too.

I've had chocolate beers before and, well, I'm not a big fan, so wasn't expecting too much from this.

It's a dark red/brown colour on pouring leaving a black filled glass, with an off white foamy head (does a good impersonation of a glass of coke!).

It has a really strong smell of bitter chocolate.

Has quite a smooth but unusual taste, with quite a strong bitter aftertaste followed by chocolate. Leaves a bitter chocolate taste in the mouth.

Overall not as bad as I was expecting and the aftertaste actually left me wanting to go back for more.

Having said that, I don't think I'll buy any more of this as by the end of the glass it was becoming a bit too heavy and well, chocolatey I guess.

Good to try though, give it a go if you like beer, or chocolate, or both.

The flavor was quite strong, but the beer lacked the supporting texture. Like you, its consistency and head reminded me more of a Coke.

Interesting. Obvious chocolate + dark beer flavor.

Enjoyed the novelty of it, but not something I'd order on a regular basis.
